PARK SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENTS

There are an alarming number of accidents that occur in national parks across the country. You would think that the signage posted up nearly everywhere would get the point across, but unfortunately, things like this happen.

The majority of these accidents are caused by human error. For my first independent project, I decided to emphasize the dangers that parks can hold for visitors through a series of posters, and poke a little bit of fun at how much neglect it takes for some of these scenarios to come to fruition.

For this project, I was inspired by vintage park signage and illustration. I wanted these posters to feel like they could exist both in and out of parks, almost as a satirical piece of merchandise you might see in a gift shop.

It was also important that there be a mixture of hand drawn aesthetics and old fashioned typography. I browsed through a number of pamphlets and modern retellings of this older style to find inspiration I could use for this project.

Once I had decided on the idea of park safety announcements, I began brainstorming different scenarios for my posters. The sketching with pen on paper phase lasted for several iterations, before I started to digitize these sketches in procreate, and start refining them.

I utilized InDesign for the overall layout of my posters, and procreate for all of my illustrations and halftones. Once I had finalized my warning sign marks, I used Illustrator to vectorize and texturize them. After putting all the finishing touches on my posters, I moved them to Photoshop where I added textural adjustments.
